Hydraulic Outrigger Cylinders

Hydraulic Outrigger Cylinders
Details:
Heavy-Duty Leveling & Stabilization Cylinders for Mobile Cranes, Drilling Rigs, and Utility Equipment.

Hydraulic outrigger cylinders (also known as stabilizer cylinders or outrigger jack cylinders) provide essential vertical lifting, leveling, and structural support for heavy mobile machinery. Designed to lift tires and chassis clear of uneven ground, these components absorb high axial and lateral loads to prevent tipping during lifting and drilling cycles.

Product Description

As one of the important configurations of large hydraulic drilling rigs, hydraulic outrigger cylinders can increase the span of the crawler chassis and improve the overall stability of the drilling rig. Hydraulic outrigger cylinders are a kind of hydraulic cylinders, which are controlled by hydraulic pressure, which can effectively keep the drilling rig stable and provide safe operation guarantee.

In fact, not all crawler equipment is equipped with outrigger hydraulic cylinders. It is only equipped with engineering equipment for higher lifting operations, such as cranes, hooks, cranes, and larger anchor drilling rigs, because of their large size. The weight is relatively heavy, so it is an auxiliary component developed to maintain the fit and stability with the ground.

How Outrigger Cylinders Work in Stabilization Systems

The working principle of hydraulic outrigger cylinders is to generate a certain amount of oil with a certain pressure through the combination of an oil pump and hydraulic oil, and to achieve a process of controlling the movement of the internal piston through a strong push, thereby generating power to support the ground. In practical applications, the outriggers play an important role. Large equipment can be lifted and loaded by the outriggers, and the elevator can be used for lifting operations at a height of 100 meters. Therefore, the application of outrigger hydraulic cylinders in the engineering industry are very extensive.

The domestic crawler hydraulic drilling rigs are equipped with pull-out hydraulic outrigger cylinders to facilitate the increase of the chassis span. On the other hand, it can realize the safety problem of drilling operations under high lift. Under stable conditions Implement drilling operations.

A mobile outrigger system typically combines horizontal beam deployment with vertical ground engagement. We supply both cylinder classifications:

Hydraulic Outrigger Stabilization System

Vertical Outrigger Jack Cylinders

The primary vertical support unit. The barrel is mounted inside the outrigger box, driving a high-strength piston rod and swivel foot pad down to the ground. These cylinders experience intense compressive stress and cyclic side loading. Integrated dual counterbalance or check valves lock the hydraulic fluid inside the cap chamber, preventing piston drift if a hydraulic hose ruptures.

Horizontal Outrigger Beam Extension Cylinders

The primary vertical support unit. The barrel is mounted inside the outrigger box, driving a high-strength piston rod and swivel foot pad down to the ground. These cylinders experience intense compressive stress and cyclic side loading. Integrated dual counterbalance or check valves lock the hydraulic fluid inside the cap chamber, preventing piston drift if a hydraulic hose ruptures.

Technical Specifications

The outrigger cylinders are designed to customer specifications or built to replace OEM cylinders across standard and high-tonnage mobile equipment.

Equipment Category Cylinder Function Critical Engineering Challenge
Mobile & All-Terrain Cranes Primary vertical support legs during full-boom lifting operations High column-buckling resistance under multi-ton axial loads; mandatory anti-drift lock valves
Truck-Mounted Boom Cranes Compact outrigger beam extension and vertical chassis leveling Compact retracted length (pin-to-pin) to fit inside the vehicle envelope
Water Well & Mining Drill Rigs Mast leveling and platform stabilization over soft or broken soil Continuous vibration resistance; multi-lip rod scrapers to block dust, sand, and slurry ingress
Concrete Pump Trucks Dynamic leveling under pulsed operational pumping forces High fatigue resistance at welded joints; heavy-duty seal kits designed for rapid cyclic pressure spikes

Selecting an outrigger cylinder requires balancing hydraulic force, mechanical buckling limits, and retracted installation space.

Calculate Required Push Force (Bore Diameter)

Determine the maximum working load on a single stabilizer leg, including safety margins (typically 1.3× to 1.5× the gross supported vehicle weight to account for tipping moments)

01

Rod Diameter & Column Buckling Limits

  • Verify stroke length versus rod diameter under peak axial load.
  • Account for mechanical stroke stoppers and lateral side loads caused by ground settling or grade slopes.

02

Pin-to-Pin and Closed Dimensions

Measure the machine chassis envelope:
  • Retracted Length (Closed Center-to-Center): Must fit within travel-mode clearance.
  • Stroke: Must provide sufficient travel to level the vehicle on sloped terrain while lifting transport tires completely off the ground.
  • Foot Pad Articulation: Confirm whether the rod requires a swivel ball joint (±15° articulation) or a rigid welded base plate.

03

Valve & Safety Architecture

Outrigger cylinders should not rely solely on the main tractor valve spool. Specify whether you require:
  • Direct manifold-mounted pilot-operated check valves.
  • Cartridge-style counterbalance valves integrated into the cylinder head or base block.

FAQ

Q: What causes an outrigger cylinder to slowly drift or retract under load?

A: Drifting is almost always caused by internal bypass past worn piston seals, or contamination inside the pilot-operated check valve holding seat. If fluid leaks past the seal, the weight of the crane forces the rod back into the barrel. DALLAST integrates dual pilot-operated check valves and high-spec Hallite/Parker step seals to ensure positive hydraulic lock.

Q: Can DALLAST build replacement outrigger cylinders for OEM machinery?

A: Yes. We regularly manufacture direct-fit replacement cylinders for mobile cranes (Sany, Zoomlion, Tadano, Kato, Terex), truck booms, and drill rigs. We build directly from your sample cylinder, 2D/3D technical drawings, or physical dimensions taken from the machine.

Q:  How do you protect exposed outrigger rods from weld spatter, gravel, and salt?

A: For severe environments, we offer induction-hardened chrome plating with up to 40 µm thickness, nickel-chrome coatings (exceeding 500 hours in ASTM B117 salt spray tests), or custom steel rod-protection tubes (weld spatter guards / protective steel sleeves) that shield the extended rod.
